2012 UTB Rule book
Overview:
UTB is a 4 on 4 action sport involving a 200’ x 85’ rectangular playing field,
with one ball, 2 goals at opposing ends, and 8 Shocking apparatus. The following will be a detailed rulebook, covering on
field play, safety regulations, equipment requirements, field regulation, and general player conduct, among other things.
The UTB league, conceived of by Leif Kellenberger, has been developed in conjunction with several industry
partners (Erik Wunsch & Eric Prum) in order to bring a new, action packed team sport to the forefront of extreme sport.
UTB incorporates 20th century technolgy with team strategy in an action packed game. UTB is a high-octane experience
for both the participating athletes and spectators.
General Game Play:
UTB is a full contact team sport. Points are scored when a 24 inch ball(?) is thrown or carried into the opponent’s goal.
The match consists of three (3) periods of seven (7) minutes each, with 3minutes in between, resulting in a minimum of 21 minutes of actual
match play in regulation time. If teams are tied after regulation play, they will play an overtime period, consisting of
three (3) minutes. If either team fails to score in overtime, they will then play 1on 1 with no time limit and unlimited
shocking allowed. Teams will switch sides after each period in regulation time. The winner will be determined based
on the highest score after regulation, including any overtime or 1 on 1 unlimited time sessions.
Timeouts: 1 per team per period. injury uses timeout, officials timeout following, time stops with penalties.
Team Format:7 players per team (option), including open substitution during match play, to include overtime,
but not to include the 1 on 1 play following a scoreless overtime period (intention…similar to hockey). The game
will be refereed by at least three officials, consisting of at least one head referee and two assisting officials.
Field Regulations: The field will be an astro turf 200’ x 85’ rectangle. Shock Zones will be established in an
eight-foot semi circle around each goal. The field will be set up in the traditional 200 by 85 foot rectangle with
standard indoor soccer goals on either end.
A single defender can inhabit the Shock Zone for any length of time, while any additional defender(s) must only
remain in this zone for no more than 3 seconds. Additional, the only offensive player that can inhabit this zone must have
possession of the ball. If a Shock Zone violation occurs, the possession of the ball will be turned over to the opposing team,
the clock will stop, and play will resume at the sound of the referee’s whistle.
Required Gear/Equipment:
Up to 7 Shockers per team (1 per player). Each player will wear goggles, a mouthgaurd, regulation jersey and shorts which
must be worn for the duration of the match. The head referee will assess any penalties regarding any violation of these
rules, at the discretion of said referee.
Player Conduct/Misconduct/Penalties: There will be two penalty boxes, one for each team, located next to each
corresponding team bench. Minor (30 second) and Major (45 second) penalties will be assessed by the officials at their
discretion. A minor penalty will be released when the opposing (non penalty) team scores and time was still
remaining in the minor penalty.
All major penalties and/or suspensions will be served to their full time duration(s).
Scoring: The game ball must break the plane of the goal entirely, by either being thrown or carried across the goal line. 1 point
will be given upon the ball either being thrown or carried across the defined goal line.
Game Time:
The game will be played in three 7-minute periods, with X amount of time between periods, not counting overtime or any
required 1 on 1 play after a scoreless overtime period. The clock will be stopped for goals scored, any penalties, and team timeouts,
all at the discretion of the officals.
Game Start:
The game will commence upon the signal of the referee. The head referee will work with the scorekeeper of the match to coordinate
any clock stoppages and recording of goals, penalties, and/or suspensions. At the start of each period, ball to be placed at the
center line of the field, with both teams starting behind their respective ’30 yd’ lines. Upon the sound of the whistle, both teams can
attack for the ball. Ball in after each goal scored will be placed at the ‘top of the key’ on the team side which was just scored upon,
with the scoring team lining up no closer than the center line of the field. Any other starts for stoppages other than those listed above
will be at the discretion of the head referee. Any players caught advancing on a ball in (inbounding) situation before the ball has
moved across the associated field marker may be made to stand in formation off to the edge of the field of play for the duration of
5 seconds before rejoining the action.
Passing:
Players may throw, toss, or roll the 24 inch ball to one another, and at the goal in an attempt to score. The ball may be moved forward,
backward, left, or right with no limitations. The ball may not be kicked, punted, or otherwise moved intentionally with ones lower body.
Possession:
When in possession of the ball, the possessor is fair game for shocking. Once the offensive player gains possession of the ball, the
defenders may shock the possessor, or otherwise attempt to remove the ball from possession using the contact rules, which will be
detailed below. Any loose or jump ball will not be a situation where players cane each other, unless possession of the ball has become obvious.
Contact:
shocking:
Defenders may only shocke the player possessing the ball, and must not shocke if the ball isn’t in clear possession of a player.
Ball Removal:
A defender may use their hands in order to remove the ball from the offensive possessor. The defender can push or block
out the possessor, and may also attempt to punch the ball out of possession. The defender is not allowed to punch the possessor,
only the ball. Any below the waist tackling or ‘wrapping up’ the possessor will not be allowed and will result in penalties.
Blocking: Players may block one another with, or without possession of the ball. Any contact with a player not in possession of the
ball must be within a reasonable distance to the actual position of the ball. All contact must be made with open hands and only from the
sides and front of those persons being blocked. No elbows or shoulder blocking will be allowed. Blocking of the ball with ones
feet (goaltending) within the Shock Zone will result in a major penalty on the player caught kicking the ball, and a restart of the
ball in possession of the non penalty team. Any other contact of the ball to a players foot outside of the Shock Zone will result in a
change of ball possession the opposing team.
Impermissible Infractions (major penalty):
